The appearance of the Broken Land did not escape the eyes, nor schemes, of the Ancient Gods. The existence of Magic Crystals and Magic Essence made it possible for them to seize or dilute the power of the goddess once and for all. They dared not touch the crystals, fearing the goddess would sense their power and regain consciousness. Furthermore, they merely hold the ability to manipulate the form which magic essence can take, lacking the ability to directly absorb it without the use of an intermediate life force. The gods decided to deceive the native inhabitants of Atus, using them as vessels to achieve their despicable plan. They concealed the origins of the Magic Crystals, telling only of their power and utility, aiming for scores of inhabitants to fully absorb the crystals and dilute the goddess strength. They opened up a passage to the Broken Land, and initiated what became known as The Tournament. They built two identical battlefields for each side of the competition, with the Magic Essence contained in each battlefield taking the form of a monster, manifested using the power of the Ancient Gods. The gods decreed that contestants from all over Atus join together, form teams, fight and compete in The Tournament, promising the victorious a magic crystal to enhance their skills. The Magic Essence, now wielded within the victors after defeating the monsters and breaking up its physical form, would be extracted by the Ancient Gods after the game, claiming they needed it to maintain the passage to the battlefield. The plan was working perfectly, the contestants, now drunk on the acquisition of power, absorbed the Crystals for their own strength, while the Ancient Gods were finally able to absorb the remaining Essence, slowly washing away all traces of the divine goddess.
